Rumors of the VPN's Demise Are NOT Exaggerated

According to Unisys, we are witnessing in real time the long anticipated end of the VPN and firewalls. In a virtual roundtable preview, Jack Koons of Unisys explains the shift to data over infrastructure for cybersecurity. Koons explains why it is time to change our approach

” The bottom line is why are we still using cars? Why is the combustion engine still on the road today? And the reason for that is plain and simple. The infrastructure is there, the investment is there. And people have put a lot of time and money into trying to tune and optimize the solution,” Koons says. “In the case of technology and cybersecurity, VPNs and firewalls, they're there, they're useful, they do a job. The problem is we're asking them to do something that they were never originally meant to do at scale.”

In a video interview with Information Security Media Group in advance of an upcoming virtual roundtable, Koons discusses:

• Why we are still using VPNs and firewalls;
• How companies go from infrastructure to identity;
• Concerns for a second wave of threats from remote devices returning to the office environment.

Koons joined Unisys Corporation in 2016 after a 25-year career as a senior DoD Officer within the National Intelligence, Special Operations, and Cyber Communities. He currently serves as chief cybersecurity strategist and technology evangelist responsible for development, enablement, and execution of Unisys global security go-to-market efforts.
