As healthcare organizations build patient portals, they must address user authentication and a variety of other security issues, much like those involved in online banking, says Erik Devine, chief security officer at Riverside Healthcare in Illinois.

In a video interview at Information Security Media Group's recent Fraud and Breach Prevention Summit in Chicago, where Devine was a panelist, he also discusses:

  • Educating patients on portal security;
  • Winning board support for security investments;
  • Training staff on security issues;

As chief security officer at Riverside Healthcare, located south of Chicago, Devine is responsible for the security of the medical center's information systems as well as compliance and policy issues. He has worked in IT since 1994, and in information security since 1999. He held information security roles in the financial sector during most of his career until he joined Riverside in 2011.
