How to Protect Data as Cloud Migration Accelerates

Skyhigh Security CEO Gee Rittenhouse on 3 Major Challenges in Securing Data
Gee Rittenhouse, CEO, Skyhigh Security

The trend of cloud migration is gaining steam, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it also has introduced new security issues. Gee Rittenhouse, CEO of Skyhigh Security, said that data is now located in various cloud platforms rather than centralized in data centers, and employees are no longer working solely on-premises and are using managed and unmanaged devices, which has increased the complexity of the security environment.

Rittenhouse listed three major challenges in safeguarding data for users no longer working within the corporate network. The first is determining where data is located. The second is knowing who had access to the data and what they are doing with it. The third is determining the level of risk exposure for the company. The lack of resources adds to the challenge.

"As an industry, we've always struggled with keeping up the workforce, and now we've complicated it because not only do we need the workforce and the security professionals, but we're putting them in an environment where they have to be experts," he said. "We see still this place in the market where third parties can come in, sit on top and simplify that environment on behalf of the security vendors and professionals because it has a uniform interface into all of these disparate data centers and data platforms."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Rittenhouse also discusses:

  • The downside of using multiple products for data protection;
  • The obstacles in using a holistic approach to safeguard data;
  • Emerging threats to the sanctity of data.

Rittenhouse helps organizations thrive by providing a simpler way to secure their data. Prior to Skyhigh Security, he was the senior vice president and general manager of Cisco's security business group. He also served as president of Bell Labs.
