There is a growing need for "citizen data scientists," such as engineers and programmers, to better understand the inner workings of artificial intelligence and machine learning as those technologies become more ubiquitous, said Tom Scanlon, technical manager of the CERT data science team at Carnegie Mellon University.

Many of those professionals often learn libraries or languages including Python, "and they can black box some AI and ML, but they don't understand how the models work and how to tune the models," Scanlon said.

A new Carnegie Mellon University CERT applied data science for cybersecurity professional certificate program aims to close some of those important gaps about AI and ML for those individuals, he said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Scanlon discusses:

  • Details about the university's new CERT applied data science for cybersecurity professional certificate program;
  • Why a growing range of professionals need to understand AI and ML as part of their jobs;
  • How organizations can be more effective in their burgeoning AI and ML projects.

Scanlon has more than 10 years of industry experience with Fortune 500 companies. He specializes in applied research topics related to secure software engineering, such as authentication and authorization, secure software development, automated testing tools, cyber threat modeling, and the risk management framework.
