For the seventh year in a row, business email compromise has produced the largest losses of any type of cybercrime, according to Steve Dougherty of the U.S. Secret Service. He says organizations need to build and maintain relationships with law enforcement agencies before an attack happens.

"If you are trying to find a contact after an incident has occurred, it's too late," he says.
In a video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2022, Dougherty discusses:
- The mission of the U.S. Secret Service;
- New and old cyberthreats to organizations;
- Steps law enforcement agencies are taking to improve public-private partnerships.
Dougherty has over 15 years of investigative experience. He is currently assigned to the U.S. Secret Service's Global Investigative Operations Center. As a financial fraud investigator in support of the federal government, Dougherty has played a pivotal role in criminal investigations surrounding cyber-enabled financial crime, money laundering, human trafficking, identity theft, healthcare fraud, embezzlement, tax/government program fraud and dark web crimes. His main area of expertise is combating money laundering in all its forms. Dougherty has been proactive in identifying new and future trends in the world of financial crime and has been a leader and a mentor to other investigators, teaching them how to uncover fraud both internally and externally.
