Healthcare InfoSec Survey Extended

Preliminary Results Reveal Key Challenges

Healthcare organizations say the top challenges they're having in implementing the HIPAA Omnibus Rule include workforce compliance training, dealing with new or revised business associate agreements, and providing patients with electronic access to their protected health data.

Those are some of the preliminary findings gleaned so far from the third annual Healthcare Information Security Today survey, which will measure progress toward ensuring the privacy and security of healthcare information.

There's still time to weigh in before the survey's final results are tallied. Information Security Media Group, publisher of HealthcareInfoSecurity, is extending the deadline until Feb. 7 for respondents to take the web-based survey. Also, each respondent will be entered into a drawing for a two $100 Amazon gift cards.

The annual survey, sponsored this year by (ISC)², aims to give healthcare information security professionals and other senior executives insights that they can track and measure over time.

Other preliminary results so far show:

  • The biggest security threat to many organizations are mistakes by staff, followed by business associates taking inadequate security precautions for protected health information.
  • Top information security priorities for 2014 include preventing and detecting breaches; improving security education and awareness of physicians and other staff; and encrypting mobile devices.
  • Top security technologies being deployed this year include audit tools and log management, network monitoring and e-mail encryption.

So, does your organization have similar priorities and challenges? Let us know the issues you're facing by taking part in our survey before it's too late. And you might win a $100 Amazon gift card as a result of your participation.
