AI in Healthcare: Greatest Promises and Biggest Worries

AI holds great promise for certain applications in healthcare, particularly around clinical research, but security leaders - and others involved in governance within medical institutions - must be ready for the implications, said John Frushour, CISO of New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Medical research "is a massive data hog," and AI offers "massive potential" to make intelligent decisions around large data sets," he said. "We need more patient data to see how they react to a drug, how they react to a treatment, what is the demographic information of the contributors who have a certain ailment."

At the same time, AI poses security threats, he cautioned. "For me as an information security professional, it comes down to controls - how we police and govern those interactions."

Frushour joined New York-Presbyterian Hospital in 2016. He previously held several security management and leadership roles at technology firms, including Nuance, where he was director of security operations. Prior to that, Frushour held technology management positions in the U.S. Marine Corps, including director of tactical networks.
